KENYA PREPARES FOR POSSIBLE EVACUATIONS AS EL NIÑO RAINS LOOM

The government has begun preparations for possible evacuations in flood-prone areas as Kenya braces for anticipated heavy El Niño rains between October and December 2026.
Authorities have identified high-risk areas and are preparing temporary holding grounds, emergency supplies and rescue centres for residents who may be forced to leave their homes if flooding becomes severe.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki said counties have been directed to map areas vulnerable to flooding, particularly communities living along rivers, in low-lying areas and other high-risk zones.
In Nairobi, authorities have identified areas including Mukuru, Mathare, Kibra, Embakasi, Dagoretti South and Makadara as vulnerable. The county is also clearing drainage systems and preparing emergency response centres.
The expected rains could increase the risk of flooding, landslides, displacement and damage to infrastructure, prompting authorities to strengthen disaster preparedness measures.
Residents in high-risk areas have been urged to remain alert and follow official weather and evacuation advisories.
The preparations do not amount to a nationwide evacuation order. Instead, authorities say residents will be moved to safer locations where weather conditions make evacuation necessary.
